How Long You Have to Wear It

If Your Retainer Is Lost or Broken
Call sooner rather than later. Teeth move measurably within weeks of retention stopping, so a replacement made promptly usually still seats properly. Left for months, the same teeth may need limited treatment before any retainer will fit.

How long does a retainer last?
Removable retainers typically last a few years with good care, less if they are chewed, boiled or left in a car. Bonded wires can last far longer but need checking.
Can I just wear it a couple of nights a week?
Some patients get away with it; plenty do not, and the ones who do not usually only find out after the teeth have moved. Nightly is the safe instruction.
How do I clean it?
Cool water and a soft brush. No boiling water and never the dishwasher — heat warps the plastic permanently.
Will a bonded wire interfere with flossing?
It changes the technique rather than preventing it, and we show you how at the appointment. Superfloss or a floss threader handles it in a few seconds once you have the knack. The wire also needs periodic checks so a quiet debond does not go unnoticed.
