Retainers in Fort Wayne, IN

Retainers and Post-Treatment Care in Fort Wayne

Retention is the part of orthodontics nobody photographs and the part that decides whether two years of treatment holds. Teeth are held in position by fibres and bone that need time to reorganise, and left alone they drift — slowly, permanently and usually in the lower front teeth first.

Our Dupont Circle Drive office fits retainers at the end of every case we treat, and we also see Fort Wayne patients who finished treatment elsewhere, lost a retainer years ago, and want to keep what is left of the result. Dr. Joel Johnson will tell you honestly whether a new retainer will hold the current position or whether the teeth have moved far enough that they need to be moved back first.

The Three Types We Fit

There is no single best retainer. The right one depends on what was corrected, how strong the relapse tendency is, and how reliably you will wear something removable.

Type Best suited to What to expect
Clear removable retainers Most patients, most cases Worn nightly for the long term; replaceable, and easy to lose
Fixed (bonded) wire Lower front teeth with a strong tendency to crowd again Cemented behind the teeth, nothing to remember; needs careful flossing and periodic checks
Traditional wire-and-acrylic retainers Cases needing adjustment or extra durability Robust and adjustable; more visible, worn on the schedule Dr. Johnson sets

Many patients end up with a fixed wire behind the lower front teeth and a removable retainer on top — belt and braces, for the movements most likely to come back.

How Long You Wear Them — the Honest Answer

Full-time for the first stretch after treatment, then nights indefinitely. Not for a year; indefinitely. Drift does not stop at some age, and the patients who come back at thirty with crowded lower teeth are almost always the ones who stopped at nineteen.

Nightly wear is a small habit for a result you already paid for. Bring your retainer to your check-ups so we can confirm the fit, and if it cracks, warps or disappears, call us the same week rather than waiting — a replacement made while the teeth are still in position is a far cheaper conversation than starting over. Caring for retainers has our cleaning and handling instructions.

Retainer Repairs and Replacements

You do not have to be a current patient. We make replacement retainers for adults across Fort Wayne who finished treatment years ago, re-cement fixed wires that have come loose at one end, and check whether an old retainer that no longer seats is worth adjusting or replacing.

  • Replacement retainers made for patients who finished treatment with another practice.
  • Loose fixed retainers re-bonded rather than removed and forgotten.
  • An honest assessment when teeth have already drifted — sometimes a new retainer is not the answer, and we will say so.
  • Short appointments, with 7:30 a.m. starts and Friday morning hours.
  • Retention checks with the orthodontist who treated you, not a hand-off.
  • Fast turnaround on emergency replacements, because the delay is what costs you the result.

Cost, Insurance and Payment Plans

Retainers included in a full course of treatment here are quoted as part of the case. Replacements and repairs for patients treated elsewhere are priced individually and are rarely covered by insurance — we will tell you the figure before we make anything. pricing, payment plans, insurance, your first visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I need to wear my retainer?

Full-time initially, then every night for the long term. Teeth drift for life, so retention is a permanent habit rather than a phase.

I lost my retainer years ago and my teeth have moved. Can you help?

Come in. If the movement is small, a new retainer may hold what you have. If it is significant, we will show you what limited treatment would take before making anything.

Can you make a retainer if I had braces somewhere else?

Yes, that is a routine appointment here. We take new impressions or a scan and make a retainer to your current teeth.

What do I do if my retainer cracks or warps?

Stop wearing it and call us. A warped retainer can push teeth in the wrong direction, and heat is usually the culprit — dishwashers, hot water and car dashboards all destroy them.

Is a fixed retainer better than a removable one?

It is better at preventing lower front relapse because you cannot forget it. It also needs careful flossing and can debond at one end without you noticing, so it gets checked at every visit.

Do retainers come with my treatment here?

Yes. Retention is quoted as part of the case when you start treatment with us, and it is fitted the day the braces come off. Retainers and post-treatment care is the overview page.

Other treatments we offer: Braces treatment · Clear aligner · Adult orthodontics · Early treatment. all services.
