Teaching and Professional Education

Beyond treating patients in Fort Wayne, Auburn and Fishers, Dr. Joel Johnson teaches orthodontics and lectures to other clinicians. That work is part of how he practices: teaching a technique requires being able to defend it, and it keeps the practice current on the imaging and digital planning that complex cases depend on.

University of Michigan

Dr. Johnson completed his orthodontic specialty training at the University of Michigan, one of the most established orthodontic programs in the country, and continues to serve as an adjunct clinical professor in the University of Michigan Department of Orthodontics. He also holds a DMD from Case Western Reserve University and undergraduate and master’s degrees from Utah State University.

National Lecturing

  • American Association of Orthodontists. Dr. Johnson lectures nationally for the AAO, the specialty’s professional association.
  • State orthodontic associations. He has lectured for multiple state orthodontic associations.
  • CBCT imaging. He lectures on cone beam computed tomography, the 3D imaging used to diagnose impactions, jaw relationships and complex bite problems.

Why It Matters to Patients

Teaching keeps a clinician accountable to evidence rather than habit. For patients, that shows up as a consultation where the reasoning is explained rather than a treatment being sold, and where the recommendation is sometimes to wait or to do nothing yet. It also means the digital tools in the practice, scanning, 3D modeling, CBCT and digital treatment planning, are used because they change decisions, not because they are new.
